I found the Canon FD 50mm F1.4 lens online for $35 and had to find out why this is still considered the nifty fifty of choice for many filmmakers. It’s insane to think you can pick up a lens like this for under $50. But like any other lens, this one has a list of pros and cons which may or may not make you want to buy this guy. Let’s take a look.
Pros
- A very affordable lens that can be bought for under $50
- Buttery smooth focus ring with a long throw and hard stops for precise focus pulls
- Front lens coating adds consistent contrast and color balance
- Adds a cool purple hue which creates a unique old school look
Cons
- A quirky mount which makes it hard to make quick lens changes in the field.
- Soft focus at F1.4 – The sharpness dramatically increases at F2.8 and beyond
- The plastic exterior construction does not feel as well built as other vintage lenses
summary
Overall, this is a solid lens that offers incredible value for the money. It produces a very unique look with a lot of character which is why I think so many filmmakers are drawn to it. On a budget, this would be an ideal starter lens for your kit.
